As you may have already read, this next-generation 911 counts more as a revision than a complete technical restart. The 992, with updated versions of the 991 flat six-cylinder turbo-charged engines, has become slightly larger and stiffer in its underbody construction and, unlike any previous 911, has an all-aluminum body. Theres also a new suspension adjustment and a new gearbox, while an all-new interior brings 911 up to date.

The Porsche 911 range at a glance
The Porsche 911 alignment is in a strange, transient place right now. The Carrera S and 4S versions of the new `992, both coupé and convertible, are already on sale, along with the GTS, GT3 RS and Speedster versions of `991.
The 992 range can be expanded to include Turbo and Turbo S, GT derivatives ready for the track and Targas in due course as well, as well as less powerful engine tones and even more powerful GTS trim levels.
According to Porsche, manual gearboxes will also be added at a later date and, in all likelihood, new versions such as the Carrera T and the historic GT2 RS will also be added.
