So it turns out that three is really the magic number, at least as far as Volkswagen is concerned. After much anticipation, the brand has confirmed that its first electric ID model, in the form of a concept known simply as ID, will be called ID 3.
It means that the impending VW ID family will use all the numbers, from 1 to 10, instead of names like Buzz and Crozz, with which other concepts have been released.
Honestly, when I first found out, I was a little disappointed. Many car companies use number-based systems for naming cars, but VW has always used names. Models like Golf and Polo, and more recently Tiguan and Touareg, all have true brand values. Of course there are distinguished examples, such as the Porsche 911 and the BMW 3 Series, but these are models with a long tradition that have acquired value in their title thanks to the quality of the product.
For me, big car names have a value that a simple number cant. But, from Volkswagens perspective, title ID 3 as part of an ID 1-10 range makes sense. On the one hand, Volkswagen uses the number 3 internally to classify hatchbacks the size of a golf, which is ID 3. And the company claims that 3 also represents the third most important chapter in its history, after Beetleand Golf. Slightly faint? Sure, but it makes sense, so well take that.
