The car is five-door only and is based on Peugeots new CMP (Common Modular Platform) architecture, which is the basis for the latest version of DS 3 Crossback. It will be the basis for the next Vauxhall Corsa now that Vauxhall-Opel has been integrated into the PSA Group.

With code name P21, the new 208 will offer its three “no-compromise” powertrain options, according to product manager Nicolas Bonnardon.

At launch, it will come with 1.2-liter gasoline set for 75 bhp (with a five-speed manual), 99 bhp (six-speed manual) or 128 bhp (eight-speed automatic); a 1.5-liter 99 bhp diesel (six-speed manual); and a 136 bhp electric powertrain.

Bonnardon told Autocar that, in the new legislative management cycle of the WLTP, the 208 electric will have a range of up to 211 miles thanks to a battery of 50kWh, which can be charged to 80% from empty in 30 minutes.

All variants are front-wheel drive. The batteries for the 208 electric will be placed in an H-section extending below the rear seats, which is where the fuel tank is in the internal combustion variants (ICE), to below the front seats.

Visually, the bar of some colors on the front, the badges and the addition of aerodynamic wheel trims, there will be very little difference between the ICE and the EV 208, as PSA thinks that EV and plug-in hybrids will become a natural part of each cars range.

“We wondered if customers would want the specificity of an electric vehicle,” Beurel said. “But they said they didnt want a flag on top, so the front shot takes the color of the body and theres a blue-green tint to the lions badges.”

In the UK, the finishing levels will be Active, Allure, GT-Line and, exclusively for EV, GT. In the GT-Line and GT, black wheel arch extensions are applied because both versions have a track width of 12 mm wider than the lower 208. In the GT-Line, its only for effects, but the EV powertrain needs it because its front axle comes with a wider stance. Wheel sizes are 16 inches or 17 inches. Peugeot designers, like many companies, would prefer larger wheels, but “in this segment, cost is important,” Beurel said.
