We all love road trips, so how about aiming for the best driving, with a touch of competition?
Thats the premise for the vintage and classic rallyThe Round the World rally, which will start this week, exactly one year from now. A copious spirit of adventure is mandatory, as are the amounts of time and money youll have to indulge in.
In the best traditions of Phileas Fogg, this 22,000-mile circumnavigation is scheduled to last only 80 days, but divided into more than a full year and three stages. “You can choose to do just one,” says Fred Gallagher, organizer of the Rally the Globe. “But wed love for you to do all three.”
Gallagher is a rally veteran who collaborated with Juha Kankkunen, Ari Vatanen and Björn Waldegard during a stellar race, before devoting himself to the organisation of epic historic rallies. But this world tour is the first since his friend, the late and missed Philip Young, raced one in 2000. So they dont happen often.
Vintage and classic cars divided into five age classes are eligible. That basically means anything up until the 1976 cut, and Gallagher expects a group of Pioneers Edwardians among the participants.
